Okay, The Morgellon was deinstalled just over a year ago.
I was supposed to have finished the Disembody edit by now.
That didn’t happen, did it?
I’ve barely begun the logging.
What’s the hold up?
I’m not real good at focusing.
Fortunately, being behind schedule and overbudget is an important part of any site specific work for Los Angeles.
What are the current distractions?

On September 7, 2011, 23 Entryways Into My Mind, Portal 7: A Mild Informality entered its second year (P7Y2). Year One (P7Y1) consisted of composing - with the collaboration of Daniel Miller, Moe Bowstern and a handful of others - approximately 365 scores for field recording. P7Y2 is a 365 day field recording extravaganza, wherein I am wearing an audio recorder on me 24/7 for an entire year. Yup, I am recording every sound in my environment for 8,760 consecutive hours. Obvs the project owes as much to Tehching Hsieh as John Cage. These are two artists who informed and inspired me as a teen more than just about any others. Well, The Residents, John Zorn and Current 93 were pretty damn important, too.
Those 8,760 hours of field recordings will make up the material for realizing the 365 compositions. I’ve scheduled five years to actually work on the realization. I did a smaller variation on this idea back in 2000, Une Fleuve Maudit (UFM). UFM took five years to complete. I’m hoping the lessons learned then will allow P7 to move at a headier pace.
You may be reading way too much about P7 on here in the coming year. Or given my lack of regularity at posting here, maybe not…

Caladium rough sketch A

In November, 23E Studios will be creating an etching in an edition of 23 with Caladium Editions, in Champaign, IL.
Caladium Editions found us through the website. They asked us to create a print, curious as to what an installation-driven art collaborative would create when given a blank page. Currently, Honyo is working on two illustrations for the print. He is integrating images from Erin, Phil, Libby and Jack. The owners of Caladium, Walter and Molly, will also be contributing to the image as members of 23E. The images are proper Penrose tiles (P3), following the rules of tenfold symmetry.

Caladium rough sketch B

23E just sent off an initial proposal to an arts center in New England. The proposal is for us to design, install and co-manage a sculpture garden.
Um, yeah, audacious and ludicrous we are.
That proposal has absorbed the last several months of my life. It was deeply research intensive as it is a site-specific, community work. I now know more about the turn of the century and industrialization in America in the 19th century than I ever could have imagined was possible.

In August My Daddy Ate My Eyes had a great tour. Documentation of the 6 installations should be complete by month’s end.
On September 25th SleepWalks will launch the first of our monthly research performances.
My Special Porpoise expects to perform in Chicago in mid-November.
And I’m nearly finished mixing the Stowe-Pembleton Project’s third and fourth records.

My tarot reading

Daniel, my dear friend, and an investor in Disembody, arranged for a friend of his to read my stars and send me a chart recently, as we saw in an earlier post. He then thought maybe he could do some tarot readings for crew. Right now that looks unlikely, as he won’t be down South any time soon, but he did do a quick three card reading specific to Disembody for me last night over the internet.

“Okay, first the 10 of wands. It has been an almost overwhelming burden to undertake, but made lighter by spreading the work around and delegating. Next the 5 of wands. Lots of disputation, argumentation going on. But lively discussion and interaction, the nature of a rough and tumble game (like say basketball or a ballroom dance.) Lastly the 9 of swords. Ouch. Things will seem nightmarish. I could elaborate more on that, but it wouldn’t be pretty.

“Can you see why I’m deciding to give up doing tarot readings? Who wants to hear shit like that? I don’t think it is an accurate spread anyway. Disembody will be a triumph. Nighmarishness is always in the head, just remember that. It has no objective reality.

“I pulled one specifically for the premiere. It is the 10 of cups. Love, joy, fulfillment.

“Its all what you decide it is anyway.

“Dan”

Yeah, I think that is about right. The week we build, between the opening and the premiere should be nightmarish. I mean, the film will kind of suck if it isn’t, right? Where’s the dramatic arc, the tension, the insurmountable challenge overcome, if that week isn’t a nightmare? The nightmare will make the joy and fulfillment of the premiere all the sweeter.

LOL

Today Amy and I went and got the new investor pamphlets made. And I did a bit more work on drumming up funds.

And I got contracts from Janet to go over. I also bought three external hard drives to load with video for Skye, elise and Jonny. Skye and elise are familiarizing themselves with the footage so that if moments of the film need exposition, they can find the relevant Making Of footage quickly. Jonny needs the footage to set up our internet archive library.

Fortunately, I had Jonny on the phone as I was beginning the transfer process. I have been leaving all my drives formatted as Fat 32 so that they will move between Mac and PC (I am on PC, the editors are on Mac). This however is likely my hard drive problem, as Fat 32 is unstable with files over 4GB according to Jonny. Certainly, the drives won’t allow transfers of data over that size, so…

Now I’m editing the footage that is larger than that, and rendering it down to manageable chunks for transfer to a drive I’ll give Skye. He’ll then format one of the other new drives for Mac; transfer the footage from the Fat 32 drive; format a second drive and then transfer the footage over for elise. And from here on out, I’ll just send them every tape and file without capturing it onto my PC. The Fat 32 drive we’ll give Jonny and he’ll prolly copy the footage and then reformat the drive to NTFS.

Anyway, as it stands, I think I’ve salvaged all of the footage up to July 6. Everything from this last trip to SF may be gone. I suspect so, anyway. I think about 20 GB of material may be gone, if not forever, for awhile, cuz we can’t afford data recovery just for those meetings. All in all, it’s about 4 TB of drives down. This project was supposed to cost me everything, so I guess, careful what you wish for…

But, let’s close on a cheery note, Jonny is coming to LA for the first week of June!!!! Erin’s loss will be Disembody’s gain! Woohoo! We are going to be productive like nobody’s business! You don’t know Jonny, if you did, you’d know it’s possible we’ll just make the whole film that week. If Erin could come with, hell, we could make the film and all the ephemera, too!

Oh fuck, I was supposed to call Erin earlier this evening…

Wake up call

LP and Dan circa ????

This morning I woke to a pair of faboo email from my friend Daniel Miller. Dan and I (above circa 2000) lived on the same floor in the dorms of our undergrad (1985). We became good friends immediately. We later lived together for a couple of years. After college we circumnavigated America together in a van that only had one seat. He drove, I didn’t have a license at the time.

Dan was just down in SF after spending a couple months in Central America. He does volunteer work in Latin America every Spring. We hung out a little, though my schedule didn’t permit us as much time as we would have liked. But we did catch up and I told him about Disembody.

This morning Dan informed me he is investing $1,500 in Disembody. Which means that if we get the Durfee grant we can afford the architectural model, despite the bid being considerably higher than I had anticipated.

And, even better, he asked a friend to do my Astrology chart. I gave him all my data, including birth time and city. This morning he forwarded a very comprehensive chart to me, it is copied below. I think it bodes well:

Lee,

here is what my astrologer friend came up with based on your birth information, relating to the transits that are affecting you in this time period. I didn’t tell her anything specific about either you or your project, so that whatever she comes up with would just be based simply on the natal info. Whether any of it is of use to you, I don’t know, but its interesting anyway.

Dan

———————————————-

Here it is. I ended up writing a lot more than I thought I would - my Virgo/Gemini getting carried away, I guess. I wrote about both the longer-term transits (to give the bigger context) and then the short-term transits happening in July. Please let me know if anything isn’t clear or you want elaboration. I’d be curious to know what your friend is working on.

Take care, Emily

Long-term Transits

Saturn square Moon, conjunct Mercury: 7/07-9/08 (exact 10/07, 3/08, 6/08, 8/08)

The Moon represents your emotions and Mercury represents your mind. In your birth chart these two planets form a challenging square aspect (90-degree angle), signifying a potential “feelings vs. intellect” inner conflict. You might tend to think through your feelings, perhaps try to talk yourself out of them if they don’t seem “rational.”

With Saturn now transiting these points, you have the opportunity to integrate these two parts of yourself. What your Gemini Moon and your Virgo Mercury have in common is the gift of communication. Saturn’s focusing energy brings more clarity about what exactly your message is and how you want to share it with the world. This is a time when your skills are being tested as you feel motivated or pressured to take action based on what you know - to prove yourself.

This period also involves a test to your mind, intelligence, self-expression, and ability to connect with the people around you and integrate into your environment. Saturn’s conjunction with Mercury signifies a rebirth of these parts of yourself - the completion of one 29-year cycle and the beginning of another.

Saturn conjunct Sun, 6/08-6/09 (exact 9/08)

The Sun represents your creativity, spirit and work in the world - how you shine your light. With your Sun in Virgo in the Third House, that’s likely to be through writing, teaching, storytelling or other forms of communication. Saturn’s transit to your Sun represents a rebirth of your identity and creativity - as with the above transit, this is the ending and beginning of a 29-year cycle. It’s worthwhile to consider what was going on 29 years ago in your life and to see if there are any similar themes. You might feel more drawn to exploring the past, or people from your past might come back into your life now, so you can heal any old wounds and move into the next cycle with a clean slate.

With 4 Virgo planets in your chart, letting go of guilt could be a strong theme.

This can be a “heavy” transit because Saturn works through pressure and the Sun rules your heart, joy and confidence - so you can feel heavy-hearted or more subdued than usual. But the purpose of the pressure is to help you go inward so you can clarify who you are and how you want to express yourself in this new cycle. This is a big growth period that calls for solitude, integration, self-definition and simplification. You have the opportunity now to build your self-confidence by taking small, pragmatic steps toward manifesting your creative vision.

Uranus opposite Pluto and Uranus, 1/07-2/09

Uranus opposite Uranus is the classic “mid-life crisis” transit - though it doesn’t always involve an actual crisis. It seems to be that when people really go for it and let themselves take risks and follow their instincts, there’s no need for crisis to come in. The only point of crisis during this time is to wake you up that it’s time to change. This is an accelerated growth period that can feel extremely creative, especially in the mental realm - you can get flashes of inspiration and insight, seemingly out of nowhere.

This transit is activating your Third and Ninth houses, bringing up the polarity between being connected in your daily life and being connected with higher consciousness or your version of god. This transit is likely to reverse the polarity - i.e., if you’ve been out of balance, too far involved in one area of life and neglecting the other, you’re now likely to put more of an emphasis on the opposite area. In this case, you may tend to be overly connected to your immediate environment - taking in a lot of information from multiple sources, saturating your mind so you don’t have the time/energy to connect with your higher self. During this period you might go to the opposite extreme to make up for lost time. Integrating these opposites involves bringing spirit into everyday life, communicating inner wisdom in a way that other people can understand, and bringing your higher vision down to earth.

For you, Pluto is also under the influence of this transit (since Uranus and Pluto are conjunct in your birth chart). This transit offers the opportunity to release core fears and step more fully into your power. Be open to the idea that this process can happen quickly – you’re ready for change.

Pluto square Saturn 10/05-10/08

Saturn represents your career and a transit from Pluto signifies a death and rebirth. You’re approaching the end of this transit, so you’re likely to be more in the “rebirth” part of this process (though you could still have a few months of letting go). You have probably gone through deep changes in your profession, maybe completely letting go

of a former work life and stepping into something new. Another possibility is that, rather than changing careers, you have transformed how you work.

Saturn is in Pisces in your birth chart, which is associated with careers in the arts, especially music, dance, film and photography.

Jupiter trine Mercury, Sun, Pluto and Uranus

June-September 08

Jupiter is now in Capricorn, forming a harmonious trine aspect (120-degree angle) with your Virgo planets and Taurus North Node. This “grand trine” in the Earth signs is a powerful time for giving real-world, pragmatic expression to your creative vision - for putting your ideas into practice.

Short-term Transits for Summer 08

* the influence is strongest for the days given, though can be felt at least a few days before and after

Venus conjunct Mars

July 20

Venus brings a beautifying, attracting and harmonizing influence to your Mars - your vitality and ability to assert yourself. With Mars in Leo, you feel most energized when you express your creativity (Leo is the sign of the Artist). Leo is particularly associated with drama and performance - this part of you loves to be center stage (even though your Virgo planets and Cancer Ascendant probably prefer to be behind the scenes). This is a time when you tend to feel good about yourself, and you receive the love and validation you’re looking for from your creative efforts.

Mars conjunct Mercury

July 20-21

Mars is an energizing influence to your Mercury - your power to communicate, whether through writing, speaking or other forms of expression. You might communicate more assertively during this time, or possibly aggressively.

Mars conjunct Sun

July 25-26

Now Mars energizes your Sun - your creativity. You are likely to feel more confident and compelled to assert yourself.
