lessons from pigments and the heat index

I’ve just finished up the screen printing of the candy boxes. What can I say? They are colorful. They are penrosy. They are branded. Some turned out better than others, but they all have actual candy inside which you can actually eat. Eat while you experience and participate in a crazy, wonderful contemporary art piece. I think eating Mike and Ikes at an art gallery blows the pants off prosciutto wrapped cheese torte or whatever.

I have some experience printing…on paper, on fabric, on wood, but no experience printing on glossy-coated, lumpy candy boxes. Here’s a few things I learned during the process:

  1. Photo emulsion and masking tape are still generally awesome.
  2. Certain pigments print more opaque than others.
  3. Certain pigments require base extender to keep from getting gloppy and sticky, which in turn makes them translucent.
  4. Hot temperatures and high humidity seem to make screen printing trickier.
  5. My favorite colors for printing opaque candy boxes are: blue, white and red, and black, but not yellow or gold.

super excited

So, as far as writing a blog entry goes… I just thought I should show you about what kind of crazy driving I did today…
